Hiring domestic staff in Switzerland: What the law says.

In Switzerland, hiring someone to help with housework, childcare or home assistance is not something to take lightly. Even for just a few hours a week, it comes with a clear legal framework and specific responsibilities as a private employer.
A written employment contract, although it may seem formal for a small job, is highly recommended. It helps protect both parties and clarify the terms of the arrangement. The law also imposes minimum wages, set by the Standard Employment Contract (CTT) for domestic workers. These wages vary depending on experience and qualifications. CTTs vary from one canton to the other.
In addition, employers must insure their employees against accidents, register them with the social security system, and declare the income. Withholding tax must also be applied if the person is not a Swiss national or does not hold a C permit.
Failing to comply with these obligations can lead to serious consequences, including fines, back payments of wages and social contributions, and even criminal charges in cases of undeclared work. It’s simply not worth the risk!
This legal framework can feel complex, especially for those hiring at home for the first time.
That’s where FamilyPro comes in. We support families through every step of the employment process to ensure a healthy working relationship, compliant with Swiss law and respectful of everyone’s rights.
